Brief Description of Services
How can educators, schools, and districts ensure the success of immigrant-origin/ELL/ESL/MLL students and nurture their sense of belonging both in classrooms and communities? Learn with 2023 Massachusetts History Teacher of the Year and Orwell Award winning teacher and author Jessica Lander about innovative approaches from classrooms across the country, inspiring stories of young immigrants, and historic struggles that transformed immigrant education. Drawing on a decade of teaching, Jessica has constructed the type of professional development that she would like to have received. Her interactive trainings support educators in exploring innovative ideas in reimagining immigrant education. Participants dive into essential stories of laws and court cases; concrete case studies of best practices; and testimonials from immigrant youth. Together participants distill lessons, apply them to their communities, and collaborate to develop actionable ideas for policies and practices that center culturally responsive approaches for developing curricula and vibrant school cultures; address anti-immigrant bias and support immigrant-origin students' success in and out of the classroom. Jessica is a MA teacher and author of Making Americans: Stories of Historic Struggles, New Ideas, and Inspiration in Immigrant Education, and a coauthor of Powerful Partnerships: A Teacher’s Guide to Engaging Families for Student Success.
