Mission: Edward W. Brooke Charter School (EWBCS), a tuition-free, K-8 public charter school, opened in 2002 with the mission of providing quality college preparatory education to Boston's underserved youths. Named after Senator Edward W. Brooke, the first African American elected to the U.S. Senate and the first and only black senator from Massachusetts, the school is committed to preparing each student for success in college and beyond.
Goals: 1. to disseminate EWBCS best practices around administering formative assessments, analyzing the results, and providing targeted student support on the basis of that analysis.
Summary: Mathematics Achievement Project. Edward W. Brooke Charter School formed a one-year partnership with Clarence Edwards Middle School in Charlestown to develop formative assessments in mathematics and to share best practices in analyzing the data from those assessments to target student support. The Edwards Middle School approached Edward W. Brooke Charter School about developing formative assessments in mathematics and sharing best practices around analyzing student achievement data from the assessments to target specific student support efforts. Success of the project was measured by monitoring improvement of individual EMS students on pre- and post-tests as well as on interim formative assessments in mathematics. The culminating tool was the process for administering assessments, analyzing results, and providing targeted student support on the basis of the results.
