Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System

MCAS Grades 5 and 8 Science and Technology/Engineering (STE) Transition Timeline

  • Spring 2021: Tryout with about 800 students per grade
  • Spring 2022 and 2023: Pilots with about 6,000 students per grade
  • Spring 2024: Expanded pilot with about 10,000 students per grade
  • Spring 2025: Statewide field test embedded in operational test
  • Spring 2026: Anticipated statewide field test embedded in operational test
  • Spring 2027: Anticipated first operational year with results reported to schools and districts; new achievement level standards set by educators in the summer of 2027
