Mass Literacy

What is the Mass Literacy Guide?

The Mass Literacy Guide empowers educators with the evidence-based practices for reading and writing instruction that all students need. It was developed in response to student data, informed by the voices of Massachusetts educators, and is based in scientific evidence for what works in the teaching of reading and writing in the early grades.

The guidance in Mass Literacy serves three purposes:

  • To provide information about how young children (grades preK-3) learn how to read and write and about instruction that is based in current evidence
  • To describe evidence-based literacy practices that DESE seeks to see used in schools, and taught in educator preparation programs
  • To share high-quality instructional resources and information with educators to support their teaching.
