MATCH Corps Program: Intensive High School Math Tutoring

Topics: Instructional Practices
At-risk Learners
Mission: The school’s mission is to help students achieve success in college and beyond.
Goals: 1. To raise student achievement in mathematics at the participating schools
Summary: Providing High-Dosage Tutoring to Students. MATCH Charter Public School has been recognized nationally for its MATCH Corps program, through which recent college grads provide high intensity tutoring to MATCH students. Tutors receive a modest living stipend and housing in a dorm on the top floor of the school in exchange for providing academic tutoring and support services to MATCH students. Through the program, students at MATCH each receive more than 300 hours of tutoring annually. Through this activity students at Boston Public Schools’ Brighton High School and English High School receive one-on-one and small group tutoring in mathematics from MATCH Corps members. This project was initiated by an administrator at MATCH, who approached leaders from the two participating high schools about offering the program to their students. The tutoring is funded in part by Americorps funds, as well as the Massachusetts Service Alliance.
