The Legal Office advises the Commissioner, Board, and Department of Elementary and Secondary Education on issues of education law, policy, and administration, supporting the agency's goal to advance educational equity and prepare all students for success after high school. The office also coordinates arbitrations under the Education Reform Act; works with the Attorney General's office on litigation; provides information on laws affecting K-12 public education; and through the Office of Professional Practices Investigations, investigates and addresses allegations of educator misconduct.
