- Phrase
Broadly, any short series of related words; grammatically, a series of related words that lacks either a subject or a predicate or both: for example, by the door or opening the box. See Clause. - Poem/poetry
Creative response to experience reflecting a keen awareness of language, often characterized by a rhyme scheme or by rhythm far more regular than that of prose. - Reading Closely to Analyze Complex Texts in the Elementary Grades
- Rhythm
Pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in a line of poetry. Poets use rhythm to bring out the musical quality of language, to emphasize ideas, to create mood, to unify a work, and/or to heighten emotional response.

Write narratives in prose or poem form that recount a well-elaborated event or experience, or a set of events or experiences; include details and dialogue to show actions, thoughts, and feelings; use temporal words to signal order where appropriate; and provide a sense of closure.

Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases based on grade 2 reading and content, choosing flexibly from an array of strategies.
