[RI.9-10.6] - Determine an author’s point of view or purpose in a text and analyze how an author uses rhetoric to advance that point of view or purpose.

    In general, a careful examination of the parts of a whole and their relationships to one another; in language arts, a study of how words, sentences, paragraphs, stanzas, or sections of a text affect its meaning.

  • Point of view
    In the study of literary texts, the vantage point from which a story is told: for example, in the first-person point of view, the story is told by one of the characters, while in the third-person point of view, the story is told by someone outside the story. More broadly, point of view can refer to any position or perspective conveyed or represented by an author, narrator, speaker, or character.
  • Purpose
    See Text Types and Purposes.
  • Rhetoric
    The study and practice of effective communication; often associated with language or images intended to persuade or otherwise influence an audience. There are three classical rhetorical strategies:

    Determine an author’s point of view or purpose in a text and analyze how the author acknowledges and responds to conflicting evidence or viewpoints.

Successor Standards:

  • RI.11-12.6
    Determine an author’s point of view or purpose in a text in which the rhetoric is particularly effective, analyzing how style and content contribute to the power, persuasiveness, or beauty of the text.
