  • Point of view
In the study of literary texts, the vantage point from which a story is told: for example, in the first-person point of view, the story is told by one of the characters, while in the third-person point of view, the story is told by someone outside the story. More broadly, point of view can refer to any position or perspective conveyed or represented by an author, narrator, speaker, or character.
  • Rhetoric
The study and practice of effective communication; often associated with language or images intended to persuade or otherwise influence an audience. There are three classical rhetorical strategies:
  • Style
Author’s or speaker’s unique way of communicating ideas—not only what is said but also how it is said. Literary elements contributing to style include diction, syntax, tone, figurative language, and dialogue.
  • Text types and purposes
The Writing Standards of this Framework emphasize three types of writing that are widely used in college study, careers, and civic participation. Many successful pieces of writing combine different text types in a single piece; for example, an argument may include a short narrative anecdote as evidence.
