Idea Development - Score Point 4

The letter is well developed and clear in purpose, with well-chosen evidence from both excerpts. The argument is organized logically by topic, with the problems of plastic refuse developed separately from those of electronic waste. An argumentative tone is presented in the introduction, where direct address from the writer establishes a connection with the intended audience: "You will be voting on an environmental bill soon and it is important that you know how harmful the effects of plastic waste and e-was[t]e are." Commentary, though sparse, is well placed and relevant: "This shows how it is insanely difficult to remove all the plastic from the ocean." A brief conclusion attempts to tie up the ideas presented, but it is not as effective as it could have been, had the writer expanded upon it. Clear ideas and logical organization support a well-developed central idea, and the writer demonstrates an awareness of the writing task and argumentative mode.

Standard English Conventions - Score Point 3

The writing shows consistent control of a variety of sentence structures: "There are many examples of the poisons that come from electronics, but among them is cadmium. Cadmium is a carcinogen, a poisonous substance that has been known to cause cancer." Control of grammar, usage, and mechanics is consistent. The complexity of the writing and the vocabulary used allows the writer to demonstrate control in all the criteria of Standard English conventions.
