Cluster - Presentation of Knowledge and Ideas
[SL.7.4] - Present claims and findings, emphasizing salient points in a focused, coherent manner with pertinent descriptions, facts, details, and examples; use appropriate vocabulary, eye contact, volume, and pronunciation. (See grade 7 Language standards 4-6 for specific expectations regarding vocabulary.)
- Claim
Statement taking a position on what is true, usually one with which reasonable people might disagree. See Argument in Text Types and Purposes, Evidence, Thesis. - Description
An author’s use of words to illustrate a scene, event, phenomenon, object, or character; descriptions in literary texts usually contain carefully chosen imagery that appeals to the audience’s sense of sight, sound, smell, touch, or taste. - Vocabulary
Words known or used by a person or group, representing concepts or ideas and meanings mutually understood; also, all the words of a language. See Academic language/vocabulary, Domain-specific language/vocabulary.

Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases based on grade 7 reading and content, choosing flexibly from a range of strategies.

Demonstrate understanding of figurative language, word relationships, and nuances in word meanings.

Acquire and use accurately grade-appropriate general academic and domain-specific words and phrases; independently research words and gather vocabulary knowledge.
