The Massachusetts Board of Elementary and Secondary Education
Update on Level 5 Schools
This memo provides an update about our work with the four Level 5 schools: Dever Elementary School and Holland Elementary School in Boston; Morgan Full Service Community School in Holyoke; and the John Avery Parker Elementary School in New Bedford.
I appreciate the Board's thoughtful discussion, deliberation, and engagement at the special meetings on May 19 and June 9 regarding the Level 5 school appeals. We are conducting an internal assessment and reflection about improvements we can make to the process. I will follow up with the Board at a future meeting.
We are updating the four Level 5 school turnaround plans to reflect the modifications that the Board adopted at its May 19 and June 9 special meetings. The Final Parker Level 5 Turnaround Plan as modified by the Board is posted on our website. The other Final Plans with your modifications will be posted shortly.
During the rest of June, we are working with the receivers and their respective districts to finalize the Memoranda of Agreement regarding school operations between our Department, the receiver, and the district. Throughout the summer, we will be working with Superintendent Durkin, Unlocking Potential, Blueprint, and Project GRAD to begin implementation of their respective turnaround plans, support their summer professional development activities, address any student registration and enrollment issues, and otherwise prepare for the start of a productive school year for 2014-2015. At the Board's meeting in September, I will report to you about the summer's work, professional development, and the start of the new school year at each of the Level 5 schools.
I look forward to updating you further at our June 24 meeting.
