The Massachusetts Board of Elementary and Secondary Education
Joint Board Meeting with the Department of Early Education and Care
A special joint meeting of the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education and the Board of Early Education and Care will be held in Malden from 5-7 p.m. on January 27, 2014. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the following:
ongoing initiatives implemented jointly by the Department of Early Education and Care (EEC) and the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (ESE) to build a healthy foundation for learning and increase school readiness;
the importance of strengthening and institutionalizing relationships between the two departments and boards; and
opportunities for future collaboration and action.
The meeting will be facilitated by Secretary of Education Matthew Malone; Maura Banta, Chair of the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education; and J.D. Chesloff, Chair of the Board of Early Education and Care. EEC Commissioner Tom Weber and I will be joined by presenters including Saeyun Lee, Executive Office of Education; Carol Nolan, EEC; and Donna Traynham, ESE. Dr. Nonie Lesaux, Professor of Education, Harvard Graduate School of Education, will be our final presenter, focusing on early literacy initiatives.
This is an important opportunity to explore how our agencies are collaborating with the Executive Office of Education, the Department of Higher Education, and the field to build a seamless system from pre-kindergarten through college and career readiness. No votes will be taken at the special meeting.
