Important Notice about the General Curriculum MTEL-Flex

Dear Colleagues,

We are writing with an important notice about the future eligibility for the General Curriculum (03) MTEL-Flex assessment. The last day to register for all General Curriculum (03) MTEL-Flex options is December 4, 2023, with submissions due on or before December 7, 2023 (11:59 p.m. ET). Please see below for more details.

Current MTEL-Flex Options

Currently, the MTEL-Flex is offered in the areas listed below. Candidates may opt to take the MTEL-Flex if they scored within one standard error of measurement (SEM) of passing on the corresponding MTEL exam since the regulatory pilot allowing for alternative assessments was approved on October 20, 2020.

  • English (61)
  • English as a Second Language (54)
  • Foundations of Reading (190)
  • General Curriculum (03)
    • Multi-Subject
    • Mathematics
  • General Science (64)
  • History/Social Science (73)
  • Spanish (28)

Upcoming MTEL-Flex Assessment Revisions

As you are aware, the revised General Curriculum MTEL, General Curriculum (78) was released August 21, 2023. General Curriculum (03) is no longer operational.

As a result, we will also be updating the General Curriculum MTEL-Flex options to align to the General Curriculum (78) test.

The General Curriculum (03) MTEL-Flex options will remain operational until the final MTEL-Flex scoring window before the first score reports are released for the revised General Curriculum (78). The new General Curriculum (78) options will be as follows:

  • English Language Arts and History/Social Science
  • Mathematics and Science and Technology/Engineering

Due to the revised structure of the test, and the General Curriculum (78) test objectives, there will be one MTEL-Flex option for each General Curriculum subtest that will provide candidates with a great amount of flexibility in determining the topics for their submissions:

  • General Curriculum MTEL-Flex: English Language Arts and History/Social Science
  • General Curriculum MTEL-Flex: Mathematics and Science and Technology/Engineering

Candidate Eligibility for Revised MTEL-Flex Assessments

After the score reports are released for the revised General Curriculum (78) MTEL, candidates will no longer be eligible for the revised MTEL-Flex based on their score on the General Curriculum (03) MTEL. Candidates will need to score within one standard error of measurement on the respective subtests of the revised General Curriculum (78) MTEL in order to be eligible for the corresponding revised MTEL-Flex.

Information will be posted on the MTEL website regarding a final submission date for the General Curriculum (03) MTEL-Flex assessment as well as when candidates will be able to register for the updated assessment when it becomes available.

Only one version of each MTEL is operational at a given time. At this time, we highly encourage candidates who are currently eligible for the General Curriculum (03) MTEL-Flex to submit their MTEL-Flex assessments before the revised MTEL-Flex becomes operational and the candidates are no longer eligible.
