The Massachusetts Board of Elementary and Secondary Education
Update from the Accountability and Assistance Advisory Council
The Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (Board) advisory councils were established by the Education Reform Act of 1993 to advise the Commissioner and the Board on various matters relevant to education reform in Massachusetts. The School and District Accountability and Assistance Advisory Council (AAAC) advises on matters pertaining to the development and implementation of the Commonwealth's School and District Accountability and Assistance system. During the 2016-2017 school year, the AAAC was consulted on the development of the school and district accountability sections of the Massachusetts state plan under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), as well as the assistance strategies the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (Department) uses in the Commonwealth's lowest performing schools.
The most recent annual report from the AAAC is attached for your review. In addition, I have invited Valerie Annear, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum of the East Longmeadow Public Schools and co-chair of the AAAC, to provide the Board with a brief update on the recent work of the advisory council at our December 19 meeting.
